Spring Training

Our season begins with Spring Training which is held over two days, Sunday April 13 and Saturday April 19 at West Penn Field in Polish Hill. Spring Training will start at 11:00am and run until 2:00pm. All new members must attend at least one Spring Training session, even those that have already been rostered by a team. Draft players are encouraged to attend both dates.

Spring training is an opportunity for new players to meet our league’s coaches and managers. During Spring Training, a player’s skill level assessed to determine which division the new player should be drafted to. New players are drafted at the end of the second day of Spring Training.

2014 Season

This year opening day will be held on Saturday May 3 at North Park. Opening day is an exciting all-day event. All of our teams play between two fields at North Park and we have a league picnic to kick off the season. The remainder of our 18-20 games season is played on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. In addition to the fields at North Park, our games are played at West Penn Field (Polish Hill), Sullivan Field (Lawrenceville) and at Devlin Field (Southside). Our season concludes with playoffs which will be held over two weekends, July 26/27 and August 2/3.

The Steel City Softball League began in 1981 and remains the longest running GLBT sports organizations in the Pittsburgh area. The league provides an atmosphere for individuals to be themselves without fear of discrimination and is open to all members and friends of the GLBT community of Pittsburgh. Originally, the league formed because GLBT athletes experienced discrimination and violence in traditional bar leagues. During the early years, the league was one of the few places that GLBT individuals could gather safely and openly. In the beginning, the league was almost exclusively comprised of GLBT players, but as times have changed our straight allies, friends and family have become an important part of our softball community. Throughout the years many friendships have been formed and athletes have been created. The SCSL provides members of the community that love softball, athletics, and camaraderie a chance to build their skills, develop friendships, and grow as individuals.
