What is the Steel City Softball League?

The SCSL is a gay and lesbian, not-for-profit, social and athletic organization, comprised of both playing and non-playing (social) members.  League activities are overseen by an Executive Board consisting of four elected officers: Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Treasurer and Secretary.  Other members of the board are appointed by the Commissioner to be the chairperson of one of several committees.  Some of those committees include Membership, Fundraising, Fields Maintenance, and Social Activities committees.

Starting in late April, 2008, the Steel City Softball League (known as the SCSL) will begin its 27th year as Pittsburgh's premiere sport organization for the area's gay and lesbian community.  The SCSL is currently a coed softball league with teams consisting of both men and women.  The SCSL is also a member of the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) which sponsors the Gay Softball World Series (GSWS).  Teams from member cities throughout the United States and Canada participate in this yearly event, which provides a showcase for gay and lesbian softball talent.  The GSWS is held in a different NAGAAA member city each year.  In August 1990, the SCSL was host city for the NAGAAA World Series.

We take a great deal of pride in being able to represent the Pittsburgh gay and lesbian community in athletic competitions.  Teams from the SCSL have traveled from coast to coast to participate in tournaments in Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Honolulu, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, OR, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa and Washington D.C.  Teams have also traveled to Montreal and Toronto, Canada.  In 2008, the SCSL hopes to send several of its teams to represent Pittsburgh in the 32nd annual NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series in Seattle, Washington in August 24-30th, 2008.

What do we do?

The SCSL plays softball, of course.  But we are more than just softball!  We strive to:

  • provide opportunities to make friends outside of the bar and club scenes

  • promote improved health through the exercise benefits of playing softball

  • offer social events beyond the softball fields

  • promote high standards of conduct for fair play and sportsmanship

  • provide competition in an environment of friendly rivalries

  • provide opportunities to travel to other cities to join in athletic competition

  • feel pride in personal growth and accomplishment and team successes

When do we play?

The SCSL begins the season with the annual "spring training."  This is usually held in early April (dates TBA) and is a time for those who are interested in playing with the league to come out, meet the members of the league, and play a little ball.  Current league members are also encouraged to come to the spring training to welcome the new members and start to loosen those softball playing muscles!  The season runs from late April through July, culminating with the championship playoffs the first week of August.  Games are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and also on Wednesday nights. Team practice times are determined by individual teams.

Where do we play?

Fields and days are yet to be announced for the 2008 season.

How do I get more information about the SCSL?

You can  print a 2008 SCSL Application.

If you want to talk to a person about the league, you can fill out a Information Request Form and your message will be forwarded to one of the league officers, or a member of the membership committee, who will contact you and can answer any questions you might have.

In the meantime, take a look at some pictures of our league in action over the last couple of  seasons.  We hope to see YOU in the picture this spring!
