SPRING TRAINING FAQs

We have two Spring Training sessions scheduled. Spring Training on Sunday will be at West Penn Field and the Saturday Spring Training will be held at Sullivan Field (directions).  THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO JOIN!!!  Come and meet us - bring a friend!  Here are some FAQs about Spring Training:

Q: When is Spring Training?
A: Spring Training will be on Sunday, April 13th and Saturday April 19th.  Both sessions begin at 12:00pm and will run until about 3pm.

Q: Where is Spring Training?
A: Spring Training will take place at the West Penn Field on Sunday, April 13th and at Sullivan Field on Saturday, April 19th.  Click here for field directions.

Q: How long will Spring Training be?
A: Spring Training will run from 12:00 - 3:00pm.

Q: Do I have to attend both Spring Training sessions?
A: They are such fun, we would hope you'll want to come to both!  But if a work schedule or other obligations prevent that, we certainly understand.  You can attend one or the other, or both!

Q: I work on weekends and can't attend the Spring Training.  Now what?
A: Not a problem.  If you know you want to join the league but can't attend the Spring Training, send us an email with your phone number.  One of the league officers will personally contact you and will set you up with a team for the season.

Q: Who will be there?
A: New members of the league, prospective members of the league, the league officers, team managers looking for new players, current players, and social members of the league.

Q: What should I wear or bring?
A: Clothing that is comfortable for you to play softball in.  If you have a glove, bring it, but if not, don't worry -- we'll have some that you can borrow for the training session.  We will have bats and softballs at the field.  You do not need cleats, but if you do plan on wearing them, our league rules are no steel cleats.  Basically, all you have to do is show up in comfortable clothes!

Q: What will we be doing?
A:  You will register at the registration table, where you'll sign in and be assigned a numbered vest.  Then, after some warm ups, our spring training committee will put you through a few basic softball skills drills.  This will help the managers and coaches see what your skill levels are so that we can see which division would be best for you.  Don't worry if you haven't played before (or in a while)!!!  Once you are on a team, they will work with you to improve your skills.  This day is just to see the basics -- run, throw, catch, hit.  Then, depending on the number of people who want to stay, there might be a short pickup game arranged after the "formal" spring training is finished.

Q: Can I bring my: partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, friend, Mom, Dad, kids, etc.?
A: Sure!  There are plenty of bleacher seats for folks to hang out on and watch the action!

Q: What SHOULDN'T I bring?
A: The City of Pittsburgh bans alcoholic beverages or dogs on it's athletic fields, so leave the Bud and Buddy at home!  :-)

Q: Do I need to bring anything else?
A: You will need to sign the waiver on the application form and bring this with you to the spring training session or complete a waiver at registration.  THIS DOES NOT OBLIGATE YOU TO THE LEAGUE!  It is only necessary for insurance purposes.  If you already are certain that you want to join the league, you can bring your player dues and your application and turn them in at registration.  When you've decided to join (we know you'll want to, because we have such fun!), you can pay for your membership later.  If we already have your completed application and dues, you don't need to sign an additional waiver, but you do need to check in at the registration tent to be assigned a numbered vest.

Q: Do I have to live in Pittsburgh to join the league?
A: No!  Some of you asked in your emails if you had to live in Pittsburgh ... this is not necessary ... we have members who come from Erie, Altoona, West Virginia and Ohio to play softball with us. There is no requirement that you live in Pittsburgh!  :-)

Q: What if it rains (or snows)?
A: If the weather looks questionable, please check the website or call the league hotline (412-683-7676) before heading out to the field.

If there were any questions we did not answer, please send email requesting additional information.
